Job Description

About The Physicians Committee

The Physicians Committee is a nonprofit organization working toward compassionate and effective medical practice, research, and health promotion. Since 1985, the Physicians Committee has led the way for reforms of federal nutrition policies, and our clinical research programs are breaking new ground in diabetes, cancer, and other serious medical conditions. We have fought for an emphasis on prevention, higher ethical standards in research, and scientific advances in basic research and effective drug development. Over the years, we have taken on battles to end ethically questionable experiments involving children and inhumane animal experiments and have worked to improve science education. We have worked with physicians, federal regulators, politicians, researchers, educators, students, and concerned citizens. And we have so much more work to do. We invite you to visit our youtube channel, our website, and Physicians Committee president Dr. Neal Barnard’s blog.

About the Physicians Committee’s Research Policy Team

The Physicians Committee’s Research Policy team works to improve research and medical training by replacing the use of animals. The team does so in a multi-faceted way, engaging federal lawmakers and regulators, educating medical professionals at institutions nationwide, and promoting our work through traditional and social media.

The replacement of animal experimentation with human-relevant methods often yields both ethical and technical advantages. Clinical, epidemiological, and pathological investigations remain the foundation of research on human disease. Although animals are often used when ethical or practical issues have precluded the study of humans, the evolving scientific understanding of the complexity of animals and of their social and psychological needs underscores longstanding ethical concerns about their use in laboratory science.

In some areas, such as medical student education, the shift to nonanimal methods is nearly complete. More than 97 percent of all United States medical schools have eliminated old-fashioned animal laboratories in favor of modern, cost-effective and humane alternatives. In other areas, technical or regulatory barriers present continuing challenges.

About this Career Opportunity

The Physicians Committee is looking for a Research and Education Programs Coordinator to join our team. The Research and Education Programs Coordinator will facilitate day-to-day forward movement of all ongoing Physicians Committee campaigns to replace the use of animals in basic research, advanced trauma life support programs, medical student curricula, pediatrics residency programs, emergency medicine residency programs, and other areas.
