Medical high School programs Education
ATI Physical Therapy and the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health will combine forces to provide sports medicine and rehabilitation services to all 10 high schools in the Harford County Public School system starting this year, the organizations said Wednesday.
Under the program, full-time athletic trainers from ATI will cover all home games for all sports and practices, while an individual UM UCH physician will be assigned to each high school and is ultimately responsible for the supervision of a student-athlete’s care.
The services will include injury education and prevention programs, conditioning program development, emergency medical care, rehabilitation, therapeutic massage, weight certification, and nutrition programs, said Lisa Boyer, Director of Sports Medicine, ATI Physical Therapy.
Bowlingbrook, Illinois-based ATI will also manage Harford County Public School’s trademarked ImPACT concussion testing program in conjunction with Dr. Derek McCoy, medical director at UM UCH Sports Medicine. ImPACT is a computerized concussion evaluation system used in making return-to-play decisions.
“Our physicians not only live and work in Harford County, but their kids attend these public schools in which they will serve, ” said McCoy, a former assistant and team physician for semi- and professional teams such as the Philadelphia Phillies and York Revolution.
Known as Upper Chesapeake Health until December 2013, UM UCH consists of the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air and the University of Maryland Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace.
