SAGINAW, MI — What Saginaw-area residents has known for 44 years as Synergy Medical Education Alliance is now CMU Healthcare.

The sign on 1000 Houghton in Saginaw reflects the change about 18 months after CMU took majority ownership of Synergy Medical.

The name change is part of CMU's progress in opening its medical school in 2013 with a class of 60 students.

“CMU Healthcare in Saginaw is a key component in the CMU College of Medicine’s curriculum model, ” said CMU College of Medicine Dean Ernest Yoder in a statement. “We’re pleased to partner with the hospitals in Saginaw and to serve residents from throughout the area.”

Synergy Medical was formed in 1968 and provides undergraduate, resident and physician training along with clinical Now, it's annual net operating revenue is $26 million.

The CMU College of Medicine is building two Saginaw locations for clinical education at 600 Irving near Covenant and at Hoyt and South Franklin near St. Mary’s.

CMU Healthcare has nearly 200 employees, including 120 faculty, physicians and residents and serves about 10, 000 area residents. The corporation as five residency programs and graduates 26 to 30 resident doctors each year.

In 2008, CMU established the College of Medicine. Initially, the college was slated to open with 100 students in 2012, but the university pushed the opening back. Students won't train in Saginaw until 2014 or later.
