Research in Medical Education Technology

Nuclear Medicine is a medical specialty concerned with the use of very small amounts of radioactive substances for diagnostic, therapeutic and research purposes. These radioactive substances localize in specific organs or tissues. Instruments called gamma cameras can then transform the emissions from the radioactive material into images which provide information about the structure and function of the organ being studied. These images provide information that can assist the physician in diagnosing diseases. The patient experiences little or no discomfort and the radiation dose is small.

The nuclear medicine technologist (NMT) is a highly skilled individual who has a solid background in anatomy, physiology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, radiation safety, clinical nuclear instrumentation, and laboratory technique. Under the supervision of a physician, the NMT participates in the daily operation of the nuclear medicine department.

The responsibilities are varied and can include performing radiation safety and quality control procedures, preparing and administering radiopharmaceuticals, operating nuclear medicine instruments, positioning patients for imaging procedures, processing of clinical computer data, collecting, preparing, and analyzing biologic specimens, and preparing data for the physician’s interpretation.

Program Description

  • 12-Month certificate program
  • Full time program, 40 hours/week
    Fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Nuclear Medicine Technology (JRCNMT)
  • Hands-on clinical education
  • Housing available
  • Begins in September of each year
  • Small class size
  • Students completing the program are eligible to take the national board examination in Nuclear Medicine Technology

Admission Requirements

  1. One of the following:
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Radiologic Technologist (ARRT)
    • Medical Technologist (ASCP)
    • Clinical Laboratory Scientist (NCA)
    • Registered Nurse
  2. Minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  3. Post-secondary courses required:
    • Chemistry with lab
    • Human Anatomy and Physiology with lab
    • General Physics
    • College Algebra
    • English Composition
    • Oral Communications
    • Medical Terminology
    • Humanities Course
    • Social Science Course

Tuition and Fees

  • Application fee - $20
  • Tuition - $4190 for program (2014 – 2015 term)
  • Radiopharmacy fee - $250
  • Books - approximately $650 for program
  • Uniforms – approximately $350

Application Procedure

Applicants must submit:

  • A completed application for the School of Nuclear Medicine Technology
  • Official transcripts of high school, college and professional education. Foreign transcripts must be evaluated (course by course) by an approved agency.
  • Two letters of reference submitted on forms provided.
